Fire Extinguisher Safety and Use

Be sure you know how to operate your fire extinguisher and the right way to fight a fire.

Keep your back to an exit and, depending on the size of your extinguisher, begin by standing 6 to 8 feet (180-240 centimeters) away from the fire. Follow the four-step PASS procedure. If the fire does not begin to go out immediately, leave the area at once.

Install Detectors

  • on every floor of your home
  • in basements and workshops
  • outside every bedroom
  • 6 to 12 inches from the ceiling away from vents

Check Detectors

  • once a month by pressing the test button until the detector beeps

Check the Batteries

  • at every time change. This way, it’s easy to remember
